Overview

Anesthesiology is more than simply making and keeping patients unconscious for surgery; anesthesiologists care for surgery patients before, during and after surgery.

This specialty includes medically evaluating the patient before surgery, consulting with the surgical team, providing pain control and support of life functions during surgery, supervising care after surgery and medically discharging the patient from the recovery unit.

Services

There are several kinds of anesthesia that can be administered:

  • Local, to numb only a specific location on the body
  • Regional, to numb an area of the body (such as an epidural)
  • General, to induce complete unconsciousness

While no surgery is without risk, patients can feel confident in the advancement of anesthetic safety. In just the last decade, deaths attributed to anesthesia have dropped 25-fold, from one in 10,000 to one in 250,000 today.

Still, we encourage all Mount Nittany Health patients to ask any and all questions they have about this important aspect of surgical care so they can feel comfortable with the expertise that anesthesiologists at Mount Nittany Health offer.

Certified registered nurse anesthetists work alongside experienced anesthesiologists to provide Mount Nittany Health patients with the best-possible care.
