Mount Nittany Medical Center has earned the American Heart Association/ American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®- Stroke Gold Plus Achievement Award with Target: StrokeSM Honor Roll. The awards recognize the hospital’s commitment and success ensuring that stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence.

To receive the honor, hospitals must submit data for stroke care to a national database. Approximately 20 different metrics are measured around scientific care and treatment that is consistently being administered to be aligned with current best practice. An organization must perform at 85 percent or greater for each metric and must sustain that performance for two years in order to receive the Get with the Guidelines gold recognition.

To qualify for the Target: Stroke Honor Roll, hospitals must meet quality measures developed to reduce the time between the patient’s arrival at the hospital and treatment with the clot-buster tissue plasminogen activator, or tPA, the only drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat ischemic stroke. If given intravenously in the first three hours after the start of stroke symptoms, tPA has been shown to significantly reduce the effects of stroke and lessen the chance of permanent disability.

“Our community can rely on us for exceptional care,” says Suzanne Barkley, MA, MSN, RN, CPHQ, vice president, quality, Mount Nittany Health. “This honor demonstrates our commitment to delivering advanced stroke treatments to patients quickly and safely. This recognition provided by the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association reinforces our team's dedication and hard work."

The Medical Center earned the award by administering thrombolytic therapy within 60 minutes in 75 percent or more of acute ischemic stroke patients treated with IV tPA.

The Medical Center was first recognized as a Primary Stroke Center in 2014 and received Get with the Guidelines Silver Plus recognition in 2015, and its first Gold Plus Award in 2016.

“These recognitions are a reflection of the remarkable care provided at Mount Nittany Medical Center,” says Susan Maynard, MS, RN-BC, CCNS-CMC, CCRN-K, stroke coordinator at the Medical Center. “This outstanding program relies on the collaborative effort of multiple disciplines, including prehospital care providers. It’s a real team endeavor, and something of which I’m proud to be a part.”
