Specialties and Biography

Mount Nittany Health is pleased to announce the addition of Philip Lowry, MD, to the Cancer Care Partnership.

Cancer Care Partnership is a partnership collaboration between Mount Nittany Health and Penn State Cancer Institute that provides state-of-the-art, personalized care for outpatient hematology, medical oncology, and infusion services. Patients benefit from the combined comprehensive cancer care resources and expertise of Mount Nittany Health and Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center - all conveniently accessed in the Shaner Cancer Pavilion at Mount Nittany Medical Center.

“I aspire to do all possible to bring cutting-edge care to a community-based medical center like Mount Nittany Health,” said Dr. Lowry. “This is specialized care that historically would only be found in a university or teaching hospital; but in an era of electronic integration should increasingly be deliverable closer to home partnering with those major medical center teams.”

Dr. Lowry earned a Bachelor of Arts (summa cum laude) and a Master of Arts degree from Harvard College and earned his Doctor of Medicine (cum laude) from Yale University School of Medicine. He completed his medical residency at the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center where he also completed a fellowship in hematology/oncology.

Throughout his career, he has gained inspiration from his patients and their ability to deal with tremendous challenges and see their recovery.

“I treat patients and staff the way I would like to be treated myself,” said Dr. Lowry.

In addition to his patients, Dr. Lowry takes special interest in ensuring the staff he works with are recognized for their role in excellent patient care. Over his long career, he worked in several cancer programs, and in each program, he led efforts to integrate services, rebuild programs, and add new capabilities with the collaboration of medical staff. Dr. Lowry completed a Physician Leadership Certificate Program at King’s College that, among other areas, focused on human resources.

Prior to joining Mount Nittany Health, Dr. Lowry was the chief of the division of hematology and oncology and director of the Cancer Service Line Guthre Clinic in Sayre, Pennsylvania where he rebuilt the clinical hematology and oncology care program, extended telemedicine to hematology and oncology patients, and oversaw the palliative care program, among other duties.

Dr. Lowry enjoys being with his family and spending time with his adult children. He is also a cyclist and has a special interest in good food and sound sleep.
