Paul C. Baresel, MD, is a board-certified physician with the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) specializing in acute care medicine. With experience in infectious disease research and public health, he combines scientific expertise with a hands-on approach to patient care.
Dr. Baresel earned his medical degree from the Robert Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont and trained in hospital medicine at Mount Nittany Medical Center. He also served as chief resident in the Family and Community Medicine Residency at Penn State Health. “I had a fantastic experience during that time, and I was excited to join the team of wonderful physicians who had already been my mentors and teachers for several years,” he says.
Dr. Baresel is certified in advanced cardiovascular life support, pediatric advanced life support and neonatal resuscitation. He also contributed to community health efforts as an informatics specialist for Centre Volunteers in Medicine. There, he worked on projects to screen patients for behavioral health needs, connect them to services and evaluate the results.
As a hospitalist, Dr. Baresel provides care to patients in the hospital, rotating between admitting new patients and rounding on those already admitted. On a typical day, he may admit 10 to 14 patients or oversee care for 15 to 18 patients. “Hospital medicine is a fulfilling, exciting, challenging field,” says Dr. Baresel. “I was raised to believe that working to improve our local communities is important, and service is one of my core values. I get a lot of satisfaction from providing direct care to people in the central Pennsylvania community.”
An avid woodworker and carpenter, Dr. Baresel enjoys making live edge furniture in his spare time. “When I'm not in the shop,” he says, “I'm probably travelling up to the Adirondack Mountains where I enjoy hiking, camping and relaxing at a small cabin retreat.”
