Overview

The da Vinci Surgical System provides surgeons with an alternative to both traditional open surgery and conventional laparoscopy, putting a surgeon's hands at the controls of a state-of-the-art robotic platform. da Vinci enables surgeons to perform even the most complex and delicate procedures through very small incisions, with unmatched precision.

For the patient, benefits may include:

  • Significantly less pain

  • Less blood loss

  • Less scarring

  • A shorter recovery time

  • A faster return to normal daily activities

  • In many cases, better clinical outcomes

Gynecologic surgery

When medication and non-invasive procedures are unable to relieve symptoms, surgery remains the accepted and most-effective treatment for a range of gynecologic conditions.

For many years, traditional open gynecologic surgery has been the standard approach to many gynecologic procedures. For women facing gynecologic surgery, the period of pain, discomfort and extended time away from normal daily activities that usually follows traditional surgery can understandably cause significant anxiety.

Fortunately, less-invasive options are available. For hysterectomies and other gynecologic procedures, robot-assisted surgery with the da Vinci® Surgical System may be the most-effective, least-invasive treatment option. Through tiny, 1–2-centimeter incisions, surgeons using da Vinci can operate with greater precision and control, minimizing the pain and risk associated with large incisions while increasing the likelihood of a fast recovery and excellent clinical outcomes.

Urologic surgery

When medication and other non-surgical treatments are either unavailable or cannot relieve symptoms, surgery is the accepted treatment for a broad range of conditions that affect the male reproductive organs and the organs of the urinary tract.

A new category of surgery, introduced with the development of the da Vinci® Surgical System, is being used by an increasing number of surgeons worldwide for prostatectomy and other urologic procedures. This minimally invasive approach, utilizing the latest in surgical and robotics technologies, is ideal for delicate urologic surgery. This includes prostatectomy, in which the target site is not only tightly confined but also surrounded by nerves affecting urinary control and sexual function. Using da Vinci, your surgeon has a better tool to spare surrounding nerves, which may enhance both your recovery experience and your clinical outcomes.
