Mount Nittany Health is taking proactive measures in response to the ongoing national shortage of IV fluids caused by Hurricane Helene’s impact on Baxter International, one of the country’s largest IV fluid suppliers. While Baxter’s production facilities are gradually coming back online, the shortage is expected to continue through the end of the year.

Mount Nittany Health’s top priority is ensuring a stable supply of IV fluids to handle emergency cases. If the supply becomes critically low, the health system will need to postpone elective surgeries and procedures to prioritize emergency care.

To prevent this, Mount Nittany Health is working closely with its medical and clinical teams to conserve IV fluid usage while maintaining the highest standards of patient care.

“We are committed to ensuring that our patients receive the care they need without disruption,” said Tiffany Cabibbo, Chief Nursing Officer, Mount Nittany Health. “By working together to conserve resources, we are hopeful that we can avoid any postponements of scheduled procedures.”

Mount Nittany Health is closely monitoring supply levels and will keep the public informed about any changes that may impact patient care.
