Making a Difference through Volunteerism: Meet Maximilian Croke

At Mount Nittany Health, volunteers play a crucial role in supporting both patients and healthcare professionals. One such dedicated volunteer is Maximilian Croke, a Penn State student who is combining his passion for healthcare with hands-on experience. As part of a course requiring students to gain real-world experience in their desired career fields, Maximilian has spent the past four months volunteering across multiple departments at Mount Nittany Health.

His time has been spread across the Medical Center’s Cardiovascular Pavilion, Ambulatory Surgical Unit, Endoscopy Department, Cancer Pavilion, and Mount Nittany Health Toftrees, where he has had the opportunity to interact with both patients and medical professionals. What Maximilian values most about his volunteer experience is the ability to engage with physicians and staff, learning firsthand about the challenges and rewards of working in a hospital setting. Beyond observing the clinical environment, he also finds fulfillment in assisting patients—answering their questions, providing directions, explaining aspects of the healthcare system, and even offering wheelchair assistance when needed.

Volunteering at Mount Nittany Health has been a transformative experience for Maximilian and his commitment also has a personal connection. “I’ve been a patient many times of Mount Nittany Health in my years here as a student at Penn State. I’ve had a wonderful experience with them during those times,” he shares.

He credits the supportive physicians and staff for shaping his understanding of healthcare and helping him build the skills necessary for a future career in the field. “It has influenced my life by providing me with greatly detailed answers to my numerous questions about hospital life and provided me with invaluable experience with day-to-day patient care,” he says.

His advice to anyone considering volunteering at Mount Nittany Health? Ask questions and embrace every learning opportunity. “Everyone there working alongside you is there to serve the same purpose as you, to help the others around you in need!” he shares.

Mount Nittany Health is deeply grateful to volunteers like Maximilian, who bring enthusiasm, dedication, and a genuine desire to make a difference. Volunteers contribute in various ways, from providing comfort to patients and families to supporting medical staff in daily operations. Whether you are a student looking for hands-on experience, a retiree wanting to give back, or simply someone passionate about helping others, there are countless ways to get involved.

If you see Maximilian at one of Mount Nittany Health’s locations, be sure to say hello! And if you’re inspired by his story, consider joining the Mount Nittany Health volunteer program—because every small act of kindness has the power to make a big impact.
