Mount Nittany Health is proud to share that Ghana Medical Relief successfully completed a medical mission in Bortianor, Greater Accra Region, from July 22nd – 26th. Among the team of volunteers from around the world were six providers and staff from Mount Nittany Health, in addition to Ghana Medical Relief founders Belinda Owusu, RN, and Samuel Owusu, MD, OB/GYN, Chair of Obstetrics, Mount Nittany Medical Center.
During the mission, the organization provided free specialized medical care to more than 5,200 individuals from Bortianor and the surrounding communities. Among the specialties covered were general medicine, pediatrics, urology, OB/GYN, ophthalmology, ENT, and dentistry.
Notably, the team performed over 320 dental extractions and procedures for those in need; issued 2,372 health insurance cards to patients for continued medical follow-up; and provided CPR training to 110 nurses.
“I have volunteered for many charities and causes throughout my career, and this was my fourth mission with Ghana Medical Relief,” said Linda Solano, BSN, RN, Women and Children’s Services, Mount Nittany Health. “I like to give back to my community, but also feel it is important to look at the big picture and remember those suffering globally too. On a personal level, this mission has helped me appreciate how fortunate we are to have what we have in this country in terms of resources, and as a professional, it has pushed me outside of my comfort zone and expanded my skill set.”
“I am fortunate to have the support of Mount Nittany Health, the nurses, and committed volunteers like Linda,” said Dr. Owusu. “Together, we are making a difference in the lives of people thousands of miles away.”
In addition to Dr. Owusu, Belinda, and Linda, please join Mount Nittany Health in recognizing our very own Frederick Doucette, MD; Deanna Martin, PA-C; Laura Strauss, BSN, RN; Amy Frantz, BSN, RN; and Jessica Lewis, MSN, RN, as well as local volunteers Kate Doucette; Julie Parker, RN; Denese Tibbens RT, CBDT; Kevin Owusu; Martin Melville; Ainsley Martin; Eric Stover; Otis Stover; and Eliza Stover for their contributions to the remarkable success of this mission.
