This Nurses Week, leave a lasting impact and celebrate our Mount Nittany Health nurses with a gift to commemorate their compassion, consistency, and care.
National Nurses Week, held May 6-12, is a special time when we are able to honor our incredible nursing staff. Nurses are at the heart of our mission. Their patience, skill, and dedication are emblematic of Mount Nittany Health’s core values. From offering comfort at difficult moments, to providing expert knowledge and coordinating patient-first care, nurses play a critical role in our care teams and our community.
We invite you to join us as we recognize our nursing staff. Whether you are honoring a special nurse in your life or supporting our overall team, by giving a gift to the Nursing Department Fund, you can create lasting change—just as our nurses create lasting change through the care they provide.
When you give to the Nursing Department Fund, you invest directly in the nurses who care for our community each day. Your generosity strengthens their ability to provide exceptional, patient-centered care and ensures they have the support and resources needed to continue serving our patients with compassion and excellence.
Josiah Contreras, RN
For Josiah Contreras, RN, he understands that every individual deserves compassion and respect. As a bedside nurse in our Emergency Department, he regularly encounters individuals and families in need of a steady presence and listening ear as they navigate their health journey.
It was during one of these shifts that he met a patient who was experiencing severe pain. Josiah was sure to check on the patient regularly, ensuring their medication was effective and the patient’s questions were answered. “He expressed genuine concern for what I was going through,” the patient shared. The patient would go on to nominate Josiah for The DAISY Award, citing Josiah’s kindness and thoroughness.
The DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Award was established by the family of Patrick Barnes, who passed away from complications of an autoimmune disorder in 1999. The program recognizes nurses for their clinical skill and the meaningful difference they make in the lives of those they serve. Upon receiving the award, Josiah remarked that the opportunity “to bring peace into people’s lives when they are experiencing turmoil” is what he enjoys most about his work—a sentiment many nurses share. “I feel honored that someone would take the time to nominate me for the DAISY Award,” Josiah said.
Josiah went on to highlight our Emergency Department team and their collective dedication. Bringing peace into people’s lives, as Josiah put it, is just one way and one example of the impact our nurses have on our patients every day.
