Debie Tyson, LPN, Reflects on Nursing Career During National Nurses Week

During National Nurses Week, May 6th – 12th, Mount Nittany Health is honored to recognize our more than 800 nurses for their service and dedication to providing quality, compassionate care to our community.

It is our special pleasure to recognize Debie Tyson, LPN, as the longest licensed nurse working in Mount Nittany Physician Group. She has been with the health system for an outstanding 48 years.

Debie first began her career at Centre Community Hospital (now Mount Nittany Medical Center) in 1976 when nurses wore white uniforms and charted with paper and pencil – very different from today’s colorful scrubs and laptops.

Following a surgery at the age of 13, Debie felt drawn to nursing by a desire to help others in a hands-on way. Connecting with patients and being there for them during their best and worst times continues to be what motivates her as a nurse.

“My best advice for new LPNs is to stay focused on why you chose this profession. Don’t get caught up in the drama that may be going on around you – stay focused on the patient and their needs,” said Debie. “Take that extra minute to get to know them as a person because often times, that’s just what they need.”

Debie shares that much has changed after nearly five decades in nursing, like significant advancements in medical technology and the increasing role and responsibilities of LPNs, but the memories she’s made will last a lifetime.

“So many memories have stayed with me through the years, like watching someone walk away unassisted with a smile and a hug from Orthopedics, or finding a baby’s heartbeat for anxious parents in OB/GYN,” said Debie. “Those are the best kind of moments.”

While reflecting on her nursing career, Debie shares that her hope is to have made someone’s life better in some small way. Looking toward the future, it’s her wish that nurses stay strong and support one another in their work.

Please join us in recognizing Debie for her service and dedication to the health system, and for furthering our mission of “Healthier people, stronger community.” During this special week, please also join us in extending our sincerest gratitude for our nurses and their contributions to the health of our community.
