Thinking about getting lip fillers? You’ll want to know how long your results will last. This helps you plan when to get touch-ups and decide if the treatment fits your budget. Juvéderm is one of the most popular fillers for creating fuller lips, but the results don’t last forever.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Emily Peterson explains what affects how long Juvéderm lasts and what to expect after your treatment.

What is Juvéderm, and how does it work?

Juvéderm is a family of injectable fillers that add volume to the face, including the lips. “Only Juvéderm Ultra and Juvéderm Volbella are FDA-approved for the lips,” Dr. Peterson said. These fillers work well because they contain hyaluronic acid, which naturally exists in our bodies and helps keep tissues moist and plump.

The Juvéderm collection includes two options made just for lips:

  • Juvéderm Ultra gives natural-looking fullness. Its smooth gel feels soft and looks natural in the lips.
  • Juvéderm Volbella offers subtle volume, helps with lip lines, and gives very smooth results.

Each type works differently based on how it’s made. How the hyaluronic acid molecules link together affects how long the filler lasts in your body.

How long does Juvéderm typically last

The different Juvéderm formulas last for different formulas last for different lengths of time in the lips. “Longevity of hyaluronic acid fillers depends on the product and volume used,” Dr. Peterson explained. “I typically advise patients they should expect the product to last 4-6 months, but the result immediately after injection is not the same as the result 6 months later due to product breakdown.”

Your lips will change over time after getting fillers:

  • First week: You’ll see results right away, but you may have swelling and bruising. Your lips may look fuller than they will later.
  • Weeks 2-3: The swelling goes down, and you’ll see your true results
  • Months 1-3: This is when your lips look their best, with good volume and shape.
  • Months 4-6: You might notice some changes as the filler breaks down.
  • Months 7-12: The filler continues to fade gradually.

It’s important to know that results fade slowly over time, not all at once. Many people schedule their next treatment when they notice their lips starting to thin again.

What affects how long Juvéderm lasts

“There are many factors that affect how long lip fillers last,” Dr. Peterson shared, “including the patient’s metabolism, amount of product injected, and lifestyle factors such as smoking, sun exposure, and skincare routine.”

Your metabolism

Your body’s metabolism affects how quickly it breaks down fillers. “Patients with a faster metabolism, such as athletes, tend to have a shorter longevity of results,” Dr. Peterson said.

Your lip structure

Your lips have special challenges for filler longevity:

  • Lips have lots of blood vessels, which can make fillers break down faster.
  • We use our mouths constantly for talking, eating, and expressions.
  • Your upper lip often keeps filler longer than your lower lip because it moves less.
  • If you have naturally thin lips, filler might break down faster.
  • The edge of your lip typically holds filler longer than the inside part.

How it’s injected

“There are various techniques of injection,” Dr. Peterson explained, “such as layering of product and injecting to maintain structural support.”

“If I am treating fine lines of the lip, I will often recommend a combination of treatment options,” she continued. “This includes laser or Botox injection, as well as skincare such as retinol and sunscreen.”

Your injector’s skill greatly affects how long results last. Experienced providers know:

  • The best depth for placing filler in different parts of the lip.
  • How to create support that holds up despite lip movement.
  • The right amount to use. “Many patients are afraid of ‘too much filler,’ but under-correction can lead to a shorter duration of results,” Dr. Peterson added.

How to make your Juvéderm lip fillers last longer

While fillers will eventually break down, you can help them last longer:

Care after treatment

What you do after treatment affects how long fillers last. For the first 1-2 days:

  • Avoid hard workouts that increase blood flow to your face.
  • Put ice on your lips (wrapped in cloth) to reduce swelling.
  • Don’t press on your lips, and avoid sleeping face-down.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Skip blood thinners with your doctor’s approval.
  • Don’t wear lip makeup for at least 12 hours.
  • Stay away from saunas, hot yoga, and steam rooms.

Long-term habits

Daily habits that affect your results include:

  • Sun protection: Sun exposure makes fillers break down faster, so using sun protection is important. Use lip balm with SPF and wear hats outside.
  • Smoking: Smoking narrows blood vessels and creates substances that break down fillers faster. This includes vaping, too.
  • Staying hydrated: Drinking enough water helps hyaluronic acid work better. Try to drink at least 8 glasses daily.
  • Skincare: Some skincare products like retinoids can boost collagen near fillers, which may help results last longer. Ask your provider which products to use around your lips.
  • Healthy diet: Foods that fight inflammation and contain antioxidants may help protect your fillers.

Follow-up treatments

Planning ahead for maintenance treatments often yields the best results. Rather than waiting until the filler has completely disappeared, scheduling touch-ups when you first notice changes can help maintain the look you love.

Your provider can create a personalized maintenance schedule based on how quickly your body metabolizes filler. Some patients might need touch-ups every 6 months, while others may go longer between treatments. This approach prevents the dramatic swing between full correction and complete filler dissolution that can make changes more noticeable to others.

Common myths about Juvéderm longevity

When it comes to lip fillers, several misconceptions can lead to unrealistic expectations. Dr. Peterson shares some common myths about Juvéderm longevity:

  • Myth: It lasts the same for everyone—Each patient’s unique lifestyle and metabolism affect how long fillers last.
  • Myth: One treatment is enough—Many patients require touch-ups for best results and need to return every few months to maintain results.
  • Myth: Dissolving is necessary if you don’t like it—The body naturally metabolizes the hyaluronic acid over time. Dissolving filler with hyaluronidase should be a very rare occurrence, typically used only in the event of a serious complication.
  • Myth: Lip fillers stretch out lips permanently—Properly placed and the proper amount of filler does not cause lasting laxity.

Having realistic expectations about Juvéderm helps you plan for maintenance and ensures you’ll be satisfied with your investment.
