Navigating your child’s healthcare needs can be tricky. Understanding when to visit a pediatrician, walk-in care or the emergency room can help you to make the best choice when it comes to seeking timely and appropriate care for your child.
Whether it’s ongoing health issues, minor injuries or urgent situations, understanding your options saves time and brings peace of mind. Knowing the type of care available in your area will help you act confidently to get your child the care they need.
When to seek pediatric care
Pediatric care focuses on your child’s health and development. It addresses their physical, emotional and behavioral needs.
“Pediatricians are trained to care for children from newborns to teenagers,” says Morgan T. Decker, MD, a pediatrician at Mount Nittany Health. “We offer well child checks, which focus on developmental and physical growth, as well as acute appointments for a variety of concerns. We also manage numerous chronic conditions and assist with care coordination, if needed.”
Pediatricians spot early signs of complex conditions and manage chronic issues like asthma, allergies and diabetes. They create personalized treatment plans to support your child’s health. A key benefit of pediatric care is the relationship that develops between your child, family and their doctor.
“Your pediatrician knows your child’s history, leading to more personalized care,” says Dr. Decker. “We also communicate in ways that help kids to feel comfortable, often making visits a positive (and even fun!) experience.”
Pediatricians also treat acute concerns such as colds, rashes, eye discharge, ear pain, etc. Mount Nittany Health’s pediatric office offers same day appointments to address these (and other) concerns. When to visit ExpressCARE
Walk-in care centers like ExpressCARE offer help for medical concerns that don’t necessarily require an emergency room. They treat minor injuries like cuts and sprains, as well as illnesses like strep throat and influenza. These centers provide same-day care and are helpful when your regular doctor is unavailable.
ExpressCARE centers often have on-site x-rays and lab work. The option to walk in without an appointment can help families to get care more quickly, avoiding longer waits at emergency rooms.
“Our team is here for all patients, all ages, seven days a week for walk-in care,” says Dr. Decker. “When care is needed, we recommend checking with your pediatrician first for same-day appointments. If none are available, their office will direct you to the nearest walk-in care center. If they don’t have availability, or the concern is more serious, we would then recommend visiting the nearest emergency room.”
What to know about visiting the emergency room
The emergency room (ER) is for serious conditions requiring immediate help. If your child has breathing difficulties, severe dehydration or signs of a major injury, the ER can provide the higher level care that they need.
“ERs are intended to provide care for serious emergencies like trauma, severe cold symptoms like difficulty breathing, allergic reactions, etc.,” says Dr. Decker. The ER has access to specialized medical teams, an in-house laboratory and expedited imaging to diagnose and treat critical situations efficiently.
Parents should give clear information about their child’s symptoms and medical history to the ER staff upon arrival to assist them with triaging the patient’s required level of care. Recognizing when to seek emergency care is crucial and understanding what the ER can (and does) provide can help families to make the right choice when it comes to seeking medical care.
Arming yourself with knowledge to make the right choice
Choosing the appropriate care depends on determining your child’s medical needs and assessing how urgent the situation is. Remember:
- For non-urgent issues like check-ups or chronic conditions, a pediatrician offers the best support.
- If your child has a minor illness or injury, call your pediatrician first. If they are not available, ExpressCARE is a good alternative.
- For serious health concerns, like sudden or severe symptoms, it’s vital to go to the emergency room.
Factors like the time of day also matter. Walk-in care centers often operate in the evenings and on weekends, giving families more flexibility for immediate but non-critical needs.
“Preparation can make a big difference in deciding where to go,” says Dr. Decker. “Keeping a list of your child’s medications, allergies and recent health issues helps providers to deliver fast and appropriate care. Knowing your local pediatric offices, walk-in care centers and emergency rooms ensures that you know where to turn when care is needed.”
