More than 360 million people live with disabling hearing loss. Recreational noise exposure, such as loud music, puts over 1 billion people aged 12-35 at risk for hearing loss.

Around 15 percent of adults over 18 report hearing trouble. Up to 39 percent of adults in their sixties experience hearing problems. Ear and hearing problems are common and can impact our daily lives. Seeking care and treatment to address concerns helps maintain overall ear health. Early treatment can prevent complications like hearing loss.

Understanding how to take care of your ears is important. We will look at simple and effective strategies to protect your hearing. These practical tips are easy to follow. They help you keep your ears healthy and your hearing clear.

Tips for healthy ears

Caring for your ears doesn’t have to be complicated. These simple dos and don’ts will help protect and care for your ears.

Do:

  • Use earplugs in noisy places: Protect your ears from harmful noise levels.
  • Check your hearing regularly: Early detection is important for identifying and addressing issues.
  • Wear hearing aids as advised: If it is recommended that you wear hearing aids, regular use can make a significant difference.
  • See a doctor: If you are concerned about your ears or hearing, make an appointment.

Don’t:

  • Put cotton buds, oil, sticks, or pins inside your ears: Avoid unnecessary risks and seek medical attention if warranted.
  • Swim or bath in dirty water: Dirty water can increase your risk of infections.
  • Share earphones or earbuds: Keep them clean and use your own.
  • Listen to loud sounds or loud music: By keeping music at a lower level, your hearing will be preserved for the long run.

Guarding against loud noises

Sudden or prolonged exposure to loud noise can damage your hearing. Sounds over 85 decibels can permanently hurt your ears.

Taking breaks and using earplugs when needed are ways to be more mindful of daily sound exposure. Aim for 50-60% of the maximum volume for audio devices for no more than 60 minutes at a time.

Aside from how loud you play your music, it’s important to be mindful of everyday sounds. Some common sources of loud noise are lawnmowers (106 decibels), fireworks (150 decibels), and concerts (120 decibels). Protecting your ears now can prevent hearing loss later in life.

Choosing the right earplugs

The best earplugs are available, comfortable, and worn when needed. Many different styles and types are available at various price points.

Earplug hygiene must also be considered. While custom-made earplugs will last longer, foam earplugs should be used once and then thrown away. You should always follow the guidelines for cleaning, inspecting, and maintaining ear protective devices.

There is a balance between volumes that are too loud and not straining to hear. Moderation in exposure and being mindful of the noises around are easy ways to protect yourself.
