Renew your confidence with expert care

Are you curious about Botox and how it can help you look and feel your best? Whether you’re seeking a confidence boost by smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles or exploring its medical benefits, Botox is a widely trusted treatment designed to help you feel more comfortable in your own skin. Known for its versatility and effectiveness, Botox is a non-surgical solution that can be tailored to your unique needs.

What is Botox and how does it work?

Botox, derived from botulinum toxin, is an injectable treatment that temporarily reduces activity in specific muscles. By targeting these areas, it helps soften the look of fine lines and wrinkles that form from repeated facial movements, such as smiling or frowning. This process allows the skin to appear smoother and more refreshed over time.

Although commonly associated with cosmetic improvements, Botox also serves a wide range of purposes:

  • Aesthetic enhancements: Diminishes the visibility of forehead creases, crow’s feet, frown lines (often referred to as “11 lines”) and other facial concerns
  • Health applications: Addresses chronic migraines, excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), involuntary muscle contractions, certain vision issues such as crossed eyes (strabismus), jaw tension caused by TMJ disorders  and symptoms of an overactive bladder

The results generally last for a few months, typically between three to four, after which additional sessions may be needed to maintain the effects. One of the best parts? Botox requires little to no downtime, making it a convenient option for those with busy schedules.

What to know about your Botox procedure

Getting Botox is a straightforward and relatively quick process, but you may have a few questions about what to expect.

  • Initial consultation: Before you receive Botox, your healthcare provider will schedule a consultation with Emily Peterson, MD, to assess your needs and goals. During this session, Dr. Peterson will ask about your medical history, any medications you’re taking and your specific concerns — whether they’re related to fine lines, migraines or another issue. This step is crucial for ensuring Botox is the right choice for you.
  • The procedure: Once you’re cleared for treatment, the actual Botox injections are quick and relatively painless. A thin needle is used to inject small amounts of Botox into the targeted muscles. Depending on the treatment area, the process usually takes about 10 to 30 minutes. Most people describe the sensation as a tiny pinch.
  • Post-treatment care: After your Botox appointment, you can generally resume your regular activities. However, your provider will likely advise you to avoid rubbing the treated areas, lying down for a few hours or engaging in strenuous activities for at least 24 hours. These precautions help ensure the Botox stays in the intended area and works effectively.
  • Side effects: It’s natural to wonder about Botox side effects, and the good news is that it is generally well-tolerated. You might experience mild swelling, redness or bruising at the injection sites, which typically resolve within a few hours to a few days.

In rare cases, more serious side effects — like difficulty swallowing, muscle weakness or drooping eyelids — can occur. That’s why it’s essential to choose a qualified provider who can guide you through the process and address any concerns that you may have.
