What we treat

Diagnosis

Dementia can be diagnosed by evaluating a patient’s physical and mental signs and symptoms. Cognitive testing is usually performed. Additional testing includes:

  • CT scans, MRI scans, PET scans
  • Lab tests
  • Neuropsychiatric evaluation

Treatment

Mount Nittany Health neurologists provide treatment plans based on the individual patient’s needs. These treatments can improve symptoms and increase quality of life:

  • Medications
  • Physical and occupational therapy

Risk factors

There are a variety of risk factors that can cause an increased risk of developing dementia. Some risk factors cannot be changed and include:

  • Age
  • Down syndrome
  • Alcohol use
  • Depression
  • Smoking
  • Family history
  • Diet and exercise
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Sleep apnea
  • Diabetes
