A Voice for Hope: Charlene Friedman’s Commitment to the Mount Nittany Health Children’s Advocacy Center

For Charlene Friedman, the mission of the Mount Nittany Health Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) of Centre County is deeply personal. As chair of the CAC Board of Directors and a passionate advocate, she understands firsthand the power of a safe space, a listening ear, and a compassionate support system. Her journey—marked by both personal experiences and an unwavering dedication—has shaped her commitment to ensuring that no child faces trauma alone.

Charlene’s connection to the CAC is not just one of leadership but of profound empathy. She has lived the reality that many children served by the CAC face, and her personal experiences fuel her drive to champion the resources and support that children need to heal.

“Reporting abuse is terrifying,” Charlene shares. “Victims often fear they won’t be believed or that their perpetrator will retaliate. For too many, the trauma becomes a burden they carry in silence for years.”

Charlene believes in the power of community to make a lasting impact. She has been instrumental in raising awareness and garnering support for the CAC’s mission. Through her advocacy, she encourages others to recognize the importance of investing in these critical services, ensuring that every child who walks through the CAC’s doors receives the care and compassion they deserve.

Charlene’s commitment to philanthropy was deeply influenced by her mother, who was actively involved in charitable work. My mother was always actively involved in raising funds for an organization called the Community Chest, the predecessor to the United Way,” Charlene recalls. From a young age, she understood the responsibility of giving back, a lesson that became a guiding principle in her life. To those who much is given, much is expected, and I just always incorporated that.” This philosophy, combined with the discipline of giving instilled through her upbringing, has shaped Charlene’s lifelong dedication to supporting meaningful causes.

“We can all play a role in breaking the cycle of abuse,” Charlene urges. “By supporting the CAC, we are giving children a chance to heal, to dream, and to believe in a future filled with possibility.”

The CAC provides a vital lifeline to children and families, offering specialized medical evaluations, forensic interviews, advocacy services, and trauma-informed counseling. These resources ensure that children are heard, supported, and guided toward healing. It is a place where professionals work tirelessly to restore dignity, provide hope, and empower survivors to reclaim their futures.

“Charlene’s unwavering support reflects her deep compassion for the most vulnerable members of our community. Her leadership and generosity continue to inspire us all as we work to build a healthier future for every child and family we serve,” said Kathleen Rhine, President and CEO of Mount Nittany Health.

“Charlene leads with both her heart and her voice. Her commitment to the Mount Nittany Health Children’s Advocacy Center and to advancing the mission of Mount Nittany Health is a powerful example of philanthropy in action,” said Adrienne Krasowitz, Executive Director of the Mount Nittany Health Foundation.

Charlene’s call to action is clear: The work of the CAC cannot happen without the generosity of donors who believe in protecting and uplifting the most vulnerable members of our community. Every gift, no matter the size, helps provide the specialized care and support that changes lives.

With deep gratitude, Charlene continues to lead the charge, ensuring that the CAC remains a beacon of hope for children who need it most. Her story is a testament to resilience, the power of advocacy, and the transformative impact of philanthropy.
