Mount Nittany Health Encourages Parents to Schedule School Physicals for Their Children

2 min read

As the new school year approaches, Mount Nittany Health reminds parents to prioritize their children’s health by scheduling school physicals. These annual exams are essential to ensure that students are ready for a successful and healthy academic year.

Comprehensive physical exams help identify any health concerns that may affect a child’s ability to perform well in school. Additionally, Pennsylvania requires kindergarten, 6th-grade and 11th-grade students to be given a “comprehensive appraisal” of their health prior to their entrance to those grades.

“School physicals play a crucial role in monitoring and maintaining a child’s overall health,” said Kristie Kaufman, MD, Mount Nittany Health Pediatrics. “During these exams, we assess the child’s growth and development, check for any medical conditions, and ensure vaccinations are up to date.”

Keeping vaccinations up to date is also critical in preventing the spread of infectious diseases. School physicals ensure that children receive the necessary vaccines to protect themselves and others.

Additionally, for students participating in school sports, physicals are required by the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA). The primary purpose of the sports physical is to evaluate the student’s overall health and fitness level.

To schedule a school or sports physical, parents can contact their child’s primary care physician or visit Mount Nittany Health ExpressCARE at their convenience, 7 days a week, 9-5, no appointment necessary. If your child is currently a Mount Nittany Health patient, you can visit mymountnittanyhealth.com to make an appointment.
